Hosting A Game

There are three ways in which you can host your own CounterStrike server as shown in the table below.

Option
Justification
1. Create your own server whilst on the game. These servers are very easy and quick to set up, but they are only temporary. Ss soon as you leave the game the server shuts down, and dropps all the players.
2. Create a Dedecated server by downloading the software from steam Turing you computer into a dedecated server allows you to host a server without actually being on CSS. The only problem this this server option is that what you do on the computer can affect the speed of the server i.e. make it lag.
3. Purchase server space from a company and get them to host the game for you. This can be an expensive option but ultimatly the results are a lot better, there will be practically no lag at all, and you dont have to worry about updates and maintenance. Also even though someone else is hosting the game you have FULL admin controlls.

Setting up your own temporary CSS server

Step 1

launch Counter Strike Source from your steam list

Step 2

Once the game has launched click "Create Server" (The seccond option down). This will bring up a box like the one shown in the image on the left.

In this box you can select the map your server will start off with, and select if you want to include any any bots in the game.

Step 3

Click on the "Game" tab across the top of the window which will bring up a list of some of the more important server settings. The most inportant i think is the Hostname. The Hostname is the name that will appear when a user searches for a game so make sure it is eye catching.

Step 4

Click on the "CPU player Options" tab across the top of the window. This will bring up the settings for the bots (if you have chosen to include any that is). Now you are ready to click the START button which will create your server.

Step 5

Sit back an relax as you server loads, this will take longer than it would for when you are just joining a game so be patient.

I would advise looking at the Server Commands page on this site as if you wish to change any of the settting once your server has been set up you must use the console.
